Travels of Cosmo III: Althorp
Althorp, Northants. in 1669 from Count L. Magalotti, Travels of Cosmo the Third, Grand Duke of Tuscany, through England during the Reign of King Charles the Second 1669 (1821).
This shows the house soon after it had been rebuilt 1666-8 by mason and surveyor Anthony Ellis for the 2nd Earl of Sunderland. Note the contrast between this early exercise in Classicism and the older cluster of buildings beside it.
