Travels of Cosmo III: Thorndon Hall

Thorndon Hall, near Brentwood, Essex in 1669 from Count L. Magalotti, Travels of Cosmo the Third, Grand Duke of Tuscany, through England during the Reign of King Charles the Second 1669 (1821).

The manor was purchased from the Mordaunt family by Sir John Petre in 1573. In 1603 he became the 1st Lord Petre. James Paine built a new house for the 9th Lord Petre in 1764-7. There is an aquatint of the Georgian Thorndon Hall by Edward Orme (1774-1848).
